FORMATTING TEXT

It's worth noting that when typing text into the editor hitting 'Enter' won't just go to a new line but will go to a new paragraph, (web talk for a double line break). To just go to a new line (a smaller gap) hold 'Shift' and press 'Enter'.

PASTING IN CONTENT:

  • When-ever you are pasting content into the editor use the 'paste from word' button (on the top row, you can see a word 'W' on the icon'). This stops any size and font forcing that can come across to be removed.

FORMATTING FONTS AND HEADINGS:

  • Use the formatting available in the editor, by this I mean the 'Heading 1', 'Heading 2' etc...
Just highlight the text and select the format from the drop down menu with 'Paragraph' next it on the bottom row of the editor buttons.

NOTE:
The editor does not use the style sheet (which is used to set fonts and colours throughout the site) so when you're in the editor even though the text appears in Black with Times New Roman font this doesn't mean it will be in this font in the actual page.

SEARCH ENGINE FRIENDLY:
Search engines like one 'Heading 1" heading per page.
If you can, only use this once and use it to name the page. Use Headings 2, 3, 4 etc... for the subheadings in the page.
eg: "Services",

TROUBLESHOOTING:
If you're formatting headings and suddenly EVERYTHING goes bold and huge, don't panic and don't unhighlight the text, simply choose 'Normal (P)' from the format drop down and then put an extra blank line under your heading text and try again.
(WHY? If a new paragraph isn't present under a Heading the editor doesn't know when to stop. This normally won't happen if you typed the content in yourself but might if you have pasted in content).

REMOVING ALL FORMATTING FROM A PAGE:

Sometimes its just all goes really wrong, and you want to start again here's a couple of quick ways of starting again on a page without losing all your content:

Remove formatting and keep tables and images

  • Select all the content in the editor, hit copy. (ctrl+c)
  • hit the "view source" button in the editor (the icon looks like " <>")
  • Highlight everything in this little window that pops up and hit delete, now the page is completely clean
  • Hit the Paste from word button and paste into the window that pops up.

Remove formatting and only keep text

  • Select all the content in the editor, hit copy. (ctrl+c)
  • hit the "view source" button in the editor (the icon looks like " <>")
  • Highlight everything in this little window that pops up and hit delete, now the page is completely clean
  • Open windows Notepad ( )
  • paste into Notepad
  • then Select all the content in the Notepad, hit copy.
  • Then back to the editor and hit paste, (since we're pasting from notepad there's no formatting coming along for the ride)

Links

Creating a Link

  • High-light the text or Image you want to make a link and hit one of the following buttons:
    • The 'Hyperlink' Button,
-for Links to other sites webpages.
When typing or pasting the 'source' (the url address) in make sure to leave the 'http://' off and choose it from the source drop-down.
Choosing "_blank" as the 'Target' will make the link open in a new window.

    • The 'Insert Link' Button,
-for Links to pages from your site.
Simply find the page you want to link to and hit 'select'

  • The new link will now look Blue, (or purple if you've been there before).

    A Note for Image Links
If the Link was made on an image you'll notice the image now has a border around it.
    To remove this Border:
    • Select the image (click it) then click on the 'Edit Image Specification' button ,
    • Don't touch the options of the window that pops up just hit OK and the border will be removed.

Editing a Link

  • To edit an existing link simply place the cursor inside the word the link is in (or if it is on an image click the image to select it) and hit either 'Hyperlink' Button, or the 'Insert Link' Button,
  • The options window for the link will open with the options already filled out, edit the link however you need to.

Images

Inserting Images

Inserting Images is easy!

  • Get the cursor (the flashing '|') where you would like the image to go and hit the image button.
  • The "Image Upload / Library" window appears.
    You'll need to upload the image you want to use from your computer into the system before you can use it so;
    • Ignoring the bottom part of the window (where the alphabet is displayed and below) press 'Browse' and find the image file you want to use.
    • Press 'Add'.
    • Hit "Back To Upload Page"
    • Find the image and hit 'Select' to put it into the page.

If there are lots of images in your Image Library you might not see the image in the list at the bottom of the window.
Click on the Letter the file began with (in the alphabet we ignored before) and find it.
In this example I uploaded an image called 'kowhai.jpg' so I know that my image will be under 'k',
  • Success! The Image is in Place.

Positioning Images

Aligning Images To be Surrounded by Text

The example below shows how to align an image to the right and at the top of a block of text.

  • Insert the Image at the begining of the first line of text.
  • With the Image still selected (it has those white boxes in its corners) hit the 'Edit Image Specification' button.
  • The window that comes up is used to edit the Image.
Choose 'right' from the 'Alignment' drop down menu and hit 'OK'.
  • The Image is now on the right with the text warping around it. Try choosing other alignment options like 'left' for different results.

The 'Edit Image Specification' button can also be used to:

  • Add and remove borders from Images
  • Add spacing to Images (so text doesn't come right up against it)
  • Add a 'Title' to an Image,
Titles will appear as hover-over text and will appear instead of an image in text-only web browsers.

Moving Images - a note to Firefox users

When an Image is selected you can grab it and move it around the page.
However
you should NEVER do this if you are using Firefox, if you do Firefox will try to update the images source (the address of the image file) and break it.
This function works fine and will not break the image if you use Internet Explorer.
