ec Newsletter #58

Greetings from a sunny spring feeling Gisborne and welcome to a new EC Newsletter.

Welcome to the new subscribers on the mailing list - I hope you get some great ideas for your web projects from these newsletters - don't forget to forward them to your friends.

The past Newsletters can be found here; our contact details are below as is the unsubscribe information at the bottom.

From the horse’s mouth – how to get higher on Google…

Understanding search engine optimisation is a difficult task – every “webspert**” has their own take on what is important (even me) and every so often I meet a web site owner or web designer that disagrees with my interpretations of Google’s recommendations.

(**I didn’t make that word up – it’s a “web expert” or “Someone who knows everything or acts like they do - but only gets their information from the web.”)

So it is great that Google has just relaunched an updated “Official Google SEO Starter Guide”

Being ranked well in Google is a must have for your web site. Having many pages – and now - many platforms that you control - is very important to help with that.

Ideally your Web Site, your Blog, your Business Facebook page and your Twitter stream should all appear in search engine results for your company name.

Add in Google Maps, LinkedIn, YouTube and photo sites likes YFrog and Flickr and there’s lots of opportunity for you to influence search engines.

Good elements I especially like about the new guide is the Glossary on each page. As a new word or concept is used on a page at the bottom of that page is a nice clear English description of what the term means.

There are links to other Google written articles on particular subjects as well as some great content on what to avoid with examples which are nice and clear and easily understandable.

This reinforces my thinking that there are perhaps 300 or so good things to do which raise your web pages higher – and around 100 bad things to avoid doing to ensure your pages rank as well as they can.

I’m still seeing some new web sites being launched with search engine optimisation practises from 5 years ago (or more) that actually hurt a web sites ability to be listed well.

So if you aren’t a customer of ours – feel free to email the report to your web designer…

You can read about the report and download it from here: -

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/09/seo-starter-guide-updated.html

The guide delves into the handheld and mobile phone search optimisation too and we will be working more on the tools for this for your web site over the coming months.

Let me know any questions that you may have about the EC Toolset and search engine optimisation in our regular second Tuesday morning Free Webinars…

Bonus Tool:
Now here’s a neat tool that is so obvious – why didn’t someone come up with it before…?

See www.followupthen.com

If you need to be reminded about doing a follow up - this is an online reminder system that works via email.

If you need to follow up a co-worker then cc 3days@followupthen.com when you email the co-worker and you will both get an email reminder from followupthen.com in 3 days…

Add the email 30minutes@followupthen.com to a BCC email that you send someone and the system will remind you in 30 minutes – great…!

Various formats of email address work - tomorrow9am@followupthen.com or aug2512pm@followupthen.com or everyweds@followupthen.com

And if you need a list of what you have set up to followupthen.com simply email to pending@followupthen.com

The service is free but does require a registration – fantastic for double or even triple the price…!

Have you seen the E-C Help section lately...?

It is available at www.ectoolset.com/help/

We've also archived these newsletters atwww.ectoolset.com/news/

That's it for now - please do let us know what you think of the newsletter - and of the ec toolset and thanks for your business...!

Cheers and thanks again
