SEO – focus on the end result…

We often get asked to look at web sites that have recently been launched – or web sites that are several years old – but are not ranked well in search engines.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the art of getting a web site’s pages into search engine results.

Great SEO is also about getting the web pages near the top of the “natural” search engine results for a range of key words.

Getting into search engine result pages can “just happen” over time but many web designers do not have the up to date knowledge required to make the web site easy for search engines to come and index the pages and rank the web site well for the various search phrases that people could type in to get found.

There are two main things to think about when you want to do better SEO for your web site: -

  1. Content
  2. The layout / back-end system of the web site

Content is quite an easy concept to understand – the more content you have on your web site – then the more chance of that content being the search phrases that people may look for in a search engine.

You should always use the language of your audience – if your potential customers call you a “lawyer” then that is what they will search for – even you may wish to be known as a “barrister and solicitor”

(True story – a client insisted they be known as “Barristers and Solicitors” but were unhappy when their web site couldn’t be found under “lawyers” – the word “lawyer” was not used on their web site and so therefore couldn’t be found)

Search Engines don’t invent content – they simply act on the content that you have on your web site.

With the layout and back-end systems of the web site the search engines are looking at where the various key words are placed within a web site – and also how the entire web site fits together.

Google in particular ranks key words in the headings or page names of the web pages as more important then text used in a paragraph within the pages contents.

These “ranking factors” or “algorithms” are constantly changing and being tweaked by the search engine themselves and as such a moving target.

We don’t control how often these “algorithms” change and so good effective SEO is an ongoing process.

So here’s a short list of things you can do to get better search engine results: -

  • Add content to your web site often (perhaps consider a blog)
  • Use the language of your customer – ask a friendly customer to “road test” your web site
  • Ensure the content management system that you use is “Search engine friendly”
  • Test the key words that you want your web site to be found by and check where you are ranking for them (perhaps keep a spreadsheet to track this over time)

You have probably also been at the receiving end of some great sounding SEO offers to “get your site higher on Google” but resist the urge to click on them – many practitioners have their own income as their best interests – not your online ranking.

This shows the power of offsite links in SEO – and also the very real need for you to be aware of what Google wants to see on your web site.

Don’t get suckered into paying for these kinds of SEO services – the results can be much more harmful then beneficial….
