Tool Review – Bit.ly

Something a little different for this newsletter – a review of a tool that I use to track click-throughs to web sites that happen when I couldn’t measure them in any other way…

Tracking the results of marketing activity is difficult – how do you measure if a print advert worked…? Or a mention in a printed newsletter actually got any results…?

Or perhaps you’ve sent people to a new link from your web site and you want to track how many people clicked that link.

Biy.ly (at http://www.bit.ly/) is the answer…

Sending a person to a web site that you don’t own means that you can’t access the reporting tools for that web site – we use Google Analytics for reporting on what is happening on a web site and create an account for each of our clients to view the information.

But for a web site that you don’t own – there’s not much chance of the web site owner letting you view the reports for that web site.

Also for your own print (read “real life”) marketing – being able to measure how many clicks the various adverts have created has up until a while ago has been difficult.

Tracking the performance of any effort means that you can manage the marketing better – do more of what works and less of what isn’t working.

Measuring the clicks on a link that you post to social media such as Facebook or Twitter – especially if the link is forwarded gives you a very clear look at what is happening once the post is “live” on the web and potentially shared by other people.

Go to http://www.bit.ly/ and sign up for a free account. Then you can install the plug-in to your browser of choice.

To use the tool when you are on a web page that you want to track – click the Icon in the toolbar and you’ll see a screen such as below: -

By inserting the link “http://bit.ly/nT5Bio” into a newsletter or a Tweet or into a Facebook post the Bit.ly system will record the click through when anyone clicks the link.

Neat huh…?

You can also customise the link be replacing the random letters and numbers with a more meaningful name such as: -

http://bit.ly/ec-main

You can use that more readable form in your printed publication to record the clicks.

This really makes it easier to link directly to sub pages within a web site as many sub pages on web sites are well search engine optimised have very long and complex page addresses such as: -

http://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/tablets/buyers-dodge-courts-samsung-tablet-ban-20111017-1lsdg.html

Becomes: -

https://bitly.com/oRN93x

And for a report of how many people have clicked this link view this link: -

https://bitly.com/oRN93x

See what I did there…? I added the “+” sign to end of the bit.ly link.

And there’s more to see what people have said – and who said it view: -

https://bitly.com/oRN93x #conversations

This becomes a very powerful social media measurement tool because you can see who may have re-tweeted your original post or who has shared the link on Facebook.
