When to make the move…

Every so often (hopefully not often if you are one of our customers…!) you may need to change web site providers.

This can be driven by many reasons but here’s some tips to take the pain away from a potential move.

Perhaps you have “out grown” your web designer – with things that you want to implement being outside their knowledge or ability.

It could be that they are just too preoccupied to provide the service level that you require or it could be they are not responding to your requests in a timely way.

When communications breaks down it can be hard to move forward to a new provider or to try and negotiate a resolution to any problems – the key forward is to keep talking / emailing and if all else fails arrange a face to face meeting.

Once communication stops is when you really know things have come to a head and change is imminent…!

Having your web site off line during a transfer of providers can be fraught with frustration with each provider blaming the other – it may not matter of course if your “old” web site wasn’t working but it’s not a good look for your visitors to have the web site down.

A new web site also effects the search engine rankings of your site – makes sense really when all the pages of your web site change – but there’s some specific things to do to ensure that you don’t drop any rankings with the new web site.

We always ensure that the search engines and human visitors see a site map page instead of an error page with a new project.

This helps to reinforce the quality statements of the web site and helps get the new pages into search engine quickly.

A change of provider to a newer web site should be easy – and not impact your business in any way.

It should be a positive thing to change providers so that your online endeavours grow over time – do make sure you find a good new provider that “gels” with you and will help get you where you want to be.

Many business owners have developed their own “style” of doing business – if you like the corporate approach with projects being carefully planned, documented and then formally managed – you would appreciate a web design company to have a similar approach.

If you are used to being a bit lose and flexible then that kind of business may be better for you to work with.

Of course opposites attract and so you may wish to go with a partner that isn’t in your style – but a word of warning – you won’t be able to change the provider to your way from their preferred style – that becomes the way of frustration.

We seem to have an even mix of working with business owners with their first web site as well as taking over existing web sites and making them perform better.

I’m sure there’s always more to learn in business relationships and so if your web site is not working how you think it should – please do contact us and lets see if we can turn that around…!

We have training webinars on alternate Tuesdays to the newsletter so they next one at 9:30am on Tuesday 15th of September.

This is in a question and answer format – if you’d like to come long please register on the web site and let us know ideas of what you would like us to cover.

Headphones with a microphone works best to participate but you can simply use your computer speakers and type questions in through the keyboard.

The format of the new E-C Toolset training Webinars is for you - our users - to run the session.

We want to know what you are finding hard to do using the toolset - and we'll step you through how to do it the best most time effective way.

We'll also be taking notes about what you are asking - and will look to improve the process - if there's a better way of achieving the end results - lets all work towards it...!

So do please make the time - we'll try and have these free webinars every two weeks (except where I end up having travel commitments - but I'll be training up the guys to take my place) - and we'll also look at having one after hours every so often - so let us know if you are keen - but can't make it to the 9:30 am webinars.
