Do you embrace this
social media stuff or not...?
Is it a business tool or a toy...?
This is a question I am getting daily from many of our clients and potential businesses that could benefit from the use of social media.
As many of you have seen me speak at marketing or social media seminars, you know Iâ€™m already a convert â€“ and recent studies show the majority of New Zealanders have also taken a liking to the various tools now available.
Not keeping up with your competitors means lost revenue opportunities and being too busy to get an understanding on why social media is important could be like burying your head in the sand.
Things like Facebook and Twitter are not going to go away â€“ thereâ€™s just too many people using them for them to disappear â€“ although they will change into more â€śbusiness friendlyâ€ť platforms and even better lead generators.
Using social media for your business is really about harnessing the power of word of mouth marketing â€“ literally using the social media tools to position you and your business as experts in your field and therefore the â€śgoto personâ€ť for someone wanting your products or services.
The information below is based on a couple of sources â€“ but the main one is the excellent survey just released from the World Internet Project New Zealand from the Institute of Culture, Discourse & Communication from AUT University in Auckland.

So hereâ€™s some of the information from the survey:
1) Five sixths of New Zealanders use the Internet. Of the remainder, a third are ex-users and two thirds have never used the Internet. One fifth of users are online at home for at least 20 hours a week, but three fifths for less than 10 hours a week.
What this means for you â€“ the web is one of the leading media engagement channels available today â€“ you better be on it and doing proactive marketing on it.
2) About half post online messages, images or videos, while one in ten earn income from such activities. At least monthly, a third of users buy something online and a sixth sell something.
What this means â€“ is that NZâ€™ers are getting more and more used to doing online business â€“ are you online enabled...?
3) Half the users are members of social networking sites (mostly Facebook [75%...!] and Bebo [18%]), and of those, nearly half participate at least daily. Just on a third use instant messaging and a quarter participate in multiplayer online games at least weekly. Nearly half of users report that the Internet has increased their contact with other New Zealanders, and more say it has increased their overall contact with family and friends.
What this means â€“ NZâ€™ers are becoming more and more â€śsocialâ€ť in their use of the web â€“ if you want to engage with these people you will increasingly have to go where they are hanging out.
And users of the web want to â€śinteractâ€ť with information / people on the web â€“ do you have the mechanisms to facilitate this â€śconversationâ€ť...? Hint â€“ Facebook, Blogs and Twitter are great ways to engage in conversation with your stakeholders...
Thereâ€™s a whole lot more in the report â€“ thereâ€™s not much difference between male / female and those higher educated and higher income users also use the web more than the lower income streams.
Sounds like an ideal market demographicâ€¦!
