How to use the way search engines rank your pages to your best advantage
Getting near the top of the search engine results for a given search phrase can be difficult – especially if a competitor is already undertaking search engine optimisation – but all is not lost…!
Let’s look at how search engines rank your pages to tease out some strategies that you can undertake to increase the rankings for your pages.
Ranking high in search results is just like having a larger billboard then your competitor – or more precisely good search engine ranking is like having many billboards in ever larger cities.
Not ranking high means your web site is off the main road and down a long narrow driveway and hardly likely to be found except by a very select few.
Getting good visibility in search engine rankings equates to getting good returns from your web site – that could be more sales, more enquiries or more leads for you to follow up.
Let’s do some market intelligence – enter into a search engine a term that you would like to be higher in the search engine rankings for.
Visit the highest ranking result and once the page loads right click on an empty part of the page and select the “view source” option from the right click menu.
Don’t panic with what you see – this is the html code that you are viewing – you don’t need to know how it works to undertake the next step…
We want to count each time the search phrase is used on the page – and also take note of the places that the phrase is used.
You may note the search phrase being used in between html code such as below:
In an overly simplistic way the search engines give each of the above occurrences a point – and for a given phrase the highest scoring page is listed at the top of the results.
Followed by the next highest and so on…
So count the number of times the phrase appears in the page at the top of the results and add more occurrences of the phrase to your pages in the same place.
So if they have the phrase once in the page title – you should have it twice. If they have the phrase used 5 times in the body content – you should have it used more.
There’s quite a bit more to good search engine optimisation but this will give you a great start.
You can use the E-C Toolset to edit your pages and don’t forget to grow the web sie by adding new pages too – search engine really like a web site that is growing in size.
We also offer to undertake search engine optimisation on your behalf which is a good idea every 6 months or so for a busy web site that should sell – please contact us for details.
Special Three Day "Thank You" starts tomorrow:
We have something very special we are doing for all our business clients tomorrow. Watch for the email on Wednesday headed "Thank You".
www.delicious.com – Social bookmarking Tool
Bookmarking web sites that you find into your browser Favourites is a good practise to get into – you can file them under various folders so you find things again (you do use folders don’t you…?) and having them listed in there is a good thing – right…?
Well Delicious is the next step – how a list of your favourites web sites that you let other people access…? Now you’re sharing information…
Delicious lets you add bookmarks and tags to the links that you save so that you can find them again – and also you can share those links with others such as your internal team, your customers or your friends and family.
You can have more than one Delicious account for different uses.

Here are a few ideas how you could use Webinars:
A wedding caterer could use them for prospective customer once per week to run through their full service list with example photos of layouts and options for that special day.
A bed and breakfast operator could host a Webinar with a walk though of the rooms available as well as some ideas of local sights and places to visit.
A professional services consultant could use the Webinar to give some tips and hints about improving their customer's bottom line.
If a new client visited your web site they could register online for the upcoming Webinar easily and quickly.
If a potential new client contacts you during the week then let them know the Webinar will be available - it's a great way of getting engagement in an interactive way.
FREE e-c Toolset Webinars
Free E-C Toolset training Webinars - see www.ectoolset.com/help for date and times.
We have training webinars on alternate Tuesdays to the newsletter so they next one at 9:30am on Tuesday 7th July.
This is in a question and answer format – if you’d like to come long please register on the web site and let us know ideas of what you would like us to cover.
Headphones with a microphone works best to participate but you can simply use your computer speakers and type questions in through the keyboard.
The format of the new E-C Toolset training Webinars is for you - our users - to run the session.
We want to know what you are finding hard to do using the toolset - and we'll step you through how to do it the best most time effective way.
We'll also be taking notes about what you are asking - and will look to improve the process - if there's a better way of achieving the end results - lets all work towards it...!
So do please make the time - we'll try and have these free webinars every two weeks (except where I end up having travel commitments - but I'll be training up the guys to take my place) - and we'll also look at having one after hours every so often - so let us know if you are keen - but can't make it to the 9:30 am webinars.
And if you don't know what a Webinar is - come along every Friday to our "Webinar about Webinars" - everything you need to know about how to participate in a Webinar - and how to hold your own...!
As always - email firstname.lastname@example.org with any comments or questions or feedback.
Also as everyone talks with clients - tell them we have the sessions every Tuesday - it's on the off week with the newsletter - so one week newsletter - next webinar and so on...
